Grillin’, Growin’, and Grinnin’

Our last post (which was a month ago) begins our story for today.  Over the last few weeks Justin and I have spent quite a few nights over the grill.  It has been a blast!  We have grilled for all of the Mississippi State games, enjoying each of them with yummy food served up on our MSU platter (which I painted in Hilton Head).

Justin's phone 047 Jerk Chicken – so good!

We have had jerk chicken and hot wing chicken.  Both have been delicious.  Paired with sweet potato fries that are tossed with Tony’s.     Our latest was a Boston Butt which we smoked yesterday.  It took all day and we have some perfecting to do, but it tasted good!   I only have the before picture  (it was way too late when it finished cooking to worry about a picture . . .)Justin's phone 061

Moving on to growing, Justin and I, as most of you know, do a little gardening each year.  We tried potatoes for the first time this year and have enjoyed them thoroughly.  The white potatoes came in around the same time as the peas, and we put a few up in the freezer.  Our garden has since grown into a hay field, and our sweet potatoes are down in amongst the weeds.  We have been wondering when they would be ready.  Justin said he saw a truck full of sweet potatoes this week, so it must be about that time.  We went to the garden yesterday and looked for the sweet potatoes.  Justin dug up 2 hills which was about 3 sacks of sweet potatoes!  Justin's phone 062 (Please ignore the beautiful hair)  This is 2 of the sweet potatoes, some of them are quite large!  Being the home maker that I am, I made my first sweet potato pie (ever) yesterday!  I can follow a recipe as good as anyone, and I have a beautiful Kitchen Aid mixer to do the work for me!

But wait that’s not all – a few weeks ago, we had an enormous tree removed from our back yard ( or as we call it the back fence row).  Half of the tree was lost in the ice storm of ‘94.  The remainder of the tree was still much larger than anything else in our area, but it fell sometime last spring.  It has been laying the field for over a year now.    Anyway, we had the tree cleaned up and there is just a dirt area behind our house in this spot.  Justin threw out some squash a while back in that area.  And guess what, his green thumb is unbelievable, we have multiple squash plants blooming and producing squash!

To sum it all up, we are still here –

 Grillin’ in style

Growin’ squash unconventionally,

and

Grinnin’ through it all!

Abigail, I do enjoy your posts!!Please don't wait a month for the next one. I'm very impressed with the gardening. By the way Josh uses brown sugar as a rub when grilling pork.
